Job Purpose
The Gilbertine Academy and Holy House of Our Lady & St. John, a ministry of The Gilbertine Institute, is a classical Catholic school that honours the theological order of the domestic Church by upholding parents as the primary educators of their children. The school provides a rich academic and spiritual environment, fostering both intellectual formation and moral virtue within the Catholic tradition. The part-time Latin teacher is an individual who understands Latin not merely as an academic subject, but as a discipline that forms the mind in attentiveness, logic, precision, and beauty. The successful candidate will help students encounter language as a doorway into history, theology, literature, and the life of the Church.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teach Latin grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and translation across multiple grade levels
Introduce younger students to Latin through engaging and developmentally appropriate instruction
Lead high school students into increasingly rigorous grammatical and textual study
Foster appreciation for the historical and ecclesial significance of Latin
Support students in developing disciplined habits of study and attention to detail
Integrate aspects of classical civilization, Church history, and Catholic intellectual tradition where appropriate
Assess student learning through translation, memorization, oral work, and written exercises
Maintain structured, orderly, and purposeful classroom environments
Collaborate with faculty to support an integrated classical curriculum
Participate in school liturgies, prayer, and community life
Qualifications & Personal Qualities
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Classics, Humanities, or related field
Competency in Latin grammar and translation
Experience teaching Latin or classical languages preferred
Familiarity with classical education models is an asset
Ability to teach students across a wide developmental range
Ability to engage students with warmth and authority
Deep appreciation for the Catholic intellectual and cultural tradition
Practicing Catholic in good standing, willing to take an Oath of Fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church
Ability to work collaboratively within a small, mission-driven faculty
Proficient with digital tools such as Google Suite/Classroom, Microsoft Office, and capable of learning new systems
Professional, dependable, adaptable, and collaborative
