Part-Time Choral Music Instructor/Teacher

Job Purpose

On behalf of Holy House Edmonton, the Gilbertine Institute is seeking a part-time teacher with expertise in sacred choral music. Relevant education and experience are required. Teacher certification is preferred but not required. Experience in Catholic, classical, and home education is highly valued, along with familiarity with Gregorian chant and the English (Anglican) choral tradition.

Holy House of Our Lady and St. Benedict is an independent Catholic school offering a shared-responsibility programme that honours the theological order of the domestic Church, affirming parents as the primary educators of their children. The school complements the vocation of home-educating families by providing academically rich formation within a deeply committed Catholic community. The successful candidate will lead and develop a choral programme that forms students musically and spiritually, cultivating both technical excellence and a love for sacred music in the life of the Church.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom instruction in accordance with the Holy House curriculum and the Catholic, classical model of education.

  • Supervise and guide students during class and school activities.

  • Maintain classroom discipline consistent with school policies and the spirit of charity and respect.

  • Participate in the prayer life of the school community, including daily Mass and communal prayers.

  • Support the integration of Catholic faith and virtue across all subjects.

  • Implement lesson plans provided by the teacher or administration to maintain continuity of instruction.

  • Provide assessment or feedback as directed by the supervising teacher or principal.

  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, staff, and administration.

  • Collaborate with the Holy House team to uphold a cohesive, faith-filled learning environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Profoundly value parents as the primary educators of their children and respect parental choice in education

  • Develop and implement a choral music programme for students across all required grades

  • Teach vocal technique, music theory, and ensemble singing across a range of skill levels

  • Select and direct sacred and classical choral repertoire, including chant and traditional works

  • Lead regular rehearsals that build musical discipline, attentiveness, and unity

  • Prepare students for performances, concerts, and liturgical participation

  • Foster a reverent and joyful culture of sacred music within the school

  • Assess student progress and provide meaningful, timely feedback

  • Collaborate with faculty and administration to support the broader life of the school

  • Participate in school liturgies, prayer, and community events

  • Maintain a structured, respectful classroom environment

Qualifications & Personal Qualities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music or a related field preferred

  • Experience teaching choral music at the elementary and/or secondary level

  • Strong knowledge of vocal pedagogy and choral literature

  • Proficiency in piano or another accompanying instrument

  • Experience directing choirs and preparing performances

  • Familiarity with Gregorian chant and/or the English choral tradition is an asset

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing, willing to take an Oath of Fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church

  • Desire to contribute to a faithful Catholic educational environment rooted in prayer and sacramental life

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, faculty, and administration

  • Comfortable using digital platforms (Google Suite, Microsoft Office, etc.)

  • Commitment to the mission and values of The Gilbertine Institute, supporting parents as primary educators and upholding

    ethical stewardship of resources.
