Classical Art Teacher (High School Level) – Villa Spiritus, Derwent

Position: Part-Time Classical Art Teacher (High School Level)

On behalf of Villa Spiritus, the Gilbertine Institute is hiring a part time teacher with an expertise in Classical Art. Relevant education and experience is a must. Teacher certification is preferred, but not required. Experience in Catholic, classical, and home education are advantageous, as well as knowledge of, and involvement in, the parochial tradition of the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter.

Villa Spiritus, a classical Catholic school in Derwent, is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Classical Art Teacher to instruct high school students in the traditions and techniques of classical art. The successful candidate will integrate art history, technical skills, and Catholic tradition in a cohesive and inspiring learning experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Profoundly value the parents as the primary educators of their child, and respect parental choice in education.

  • Teach high school-level courses in classical drawing & painting, with an emphasis on the techniques of Classical artists.

  • Integrate Catholic themes, symbolism, and theology into the study and practice of classical art.

  • Provide instruction on artistic composition, proportion, perspective, and the methods of the Old Masters.

  • Encourage students to develop artistic discipline, creativity, and a deep appreciation for beauty as a reflection of God’s creation.

    Assess student work through critique, portfolio reviews, and examinations.

  • Collaborate with other faculty to integrate art instruction with history, literature, and philosophy.

  • Supervise students during designated school activities and uphold a disciplined, respectful classroom environment.

  • Participate in school liturgies, prayers, and other faith-based activities in accordance with the Catholic mission of Villa Spiritus.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Fine Arts, Classical Art, Art History, or a related field.

  • Experience in classical art techniques, including drawing, painting, and sculpture.

  • A strong understanding of Catholic artistic traditions and Sacred Art.

  • Teaching experience, preferably in a classical education setting.

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing, willing to take an Oath of Fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

  • Passion for classical education and the role of beauty in forming virtuous, well-educated young people.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, faculty, and administration.

  • Familiarity with Google Suite/Classroom, Microsoft Office, and digital communication tools is an asset.

Certificated staff are not required to be members of the ATA, but remuneration will be commensurate with the standard grid in Alberta, based upon years of experience and years of education. Staff who are at least 0.5 full time equivalent (FTE) participate in a group benefit plan.
